Southern Manhood and Flannery O’Connor Work
Chair: Sura Rath, Central Washington University
Studies of women characters and female sexuality are a point of
continuing critical interest among O'Connor scholars, and some of the
insights from these studies have even been extended to speculations on
the author's own attitudes toward gender issues. Yet, little critical
attention has been focused on her attitude toward men, especially toward
the South's construction of manhood. This ALA session invites papers on
the issues of Southern manhood raised by O'Connor in her fiction and
non-fiction.
Twenty-minute papers should be grounded in theoretical foundations of
gender/edconstruction, rather than simply summaries of character and
action.
