Call for Papers: American Indians Today
Abstract/Proposals by 15 November 2004
Southwest/Texas Popular & American Popular Culture Associations 26th Annual
Conference
Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 9-12, 2005.

Proposals are being accepted for an area of study related to contemporary
American Indian culture-American Indians Today. Presentations that explore
contemporary American Indian culture, history, politics, literature, issues,
ideas or any theme or aspect relevant to American Indian culture are
welcome.
American Indian culture has been an influence on and has been influenced by
American culture. American Indian culture is diverse and an examination of
the culture, influences, adaptation, and cultural syncretism, is welcomed.
One might investigate: the oral tradition; poetry; myth; legend; literature;
philosophy; painting; sculpture; weaving; basketry; pottery; dance; music
(drum, flute, songs, etc.); fashion; artifacts; American Indian foods;
imagery or lack of in mainstream media; identity; cultural appropriation;
stereotypes, mascots, etc. Any form of cultural expression that is uniquely
American Indian is welcome. One may also consider the impact that
appropriation of American Indian identity has on the authenticity, validity
and reliability of American Indian resources.
