The Limits of Representation: Speaking the Unspeakable
(02/15/05; 08/04/05)

7th Annual Conference, Buckinghamshire Chilterns University
College

In our media-saturated world, in which ‘Big Brother’’s
sexual excesses compete for TV ratings with live footage of
war atrocities, there seems to be no corner of cultural
experience that has been left unexposed. Is it possible
therefore to identify areas or topics which elude
representation? Is the concept of taboo still legitimate or
is everything permissible – and accessible to our
scrutiny?

This multi-disciplinary, one-day conference seeks to explore
those issues of representation that have traditionally been
seen as problematic, which undermine or challenge normative
concepts of representation or push the boundaries of what
can be said, seen and heard.

Paper topics may be based in any humanities discipline such
as film, TV, literature, photography and visual culture; we
are interested in receiving proposals from a wide range of
research directions relevant to the focus of the conference
including, but not limited to, the following:

· The limits of the body: the pathological body; suicide;
anorexia
· The sexualized body: masturbation; pornography; gendered
bodies
· The fantastic; mythic; horror
· Simulations; virtual reality; CGI
· Techniques of re-presentation: re-mediation;
intertextualities
· Marginal representations: subcultures; fandom
· Aesthetics, ethics of representation
· Contested historiographies
· The invisibility of class

The conference will be held at Buckinghamshire Chilterns
University College, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK on 8th
April 2005.

Deadline for submissions: 15 February 2005.

Please email any inquiries, or submissions of not more than
200 words, to the Conference Organizers: Tamar Jeffers
McDonald (tjeffe01_at_bcuc.ac.uk) or Elizabeth Wells
(ewells01_at_bcuc.ac.uk).
