CFP: Religion and Theatre Focus Group Emerging Scholars Panel (10/20/04;
ATHE 2005, San Francisco, 7/28/05-7/31/05)

Religion and Theatre Focus Group Emerging Scholars Panel
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2005 Conference
San Francisco, CA, July 28-July 31, 2005

The Religion and Theatre Focus Group of ATHE is pleased to announce a call
for papers for its Emerging Scholars Panel for the 2005 conference in San
Francisco. Open to anyone who has yet to present at a major academic
conference, this panel provides a unique forum for exploration of the
various intersections between religion and theatre. What are the
implications of the phrase “religion and theatre”? How have religious
practices and ways of thinking affected a community’s theatre? What can it
teach us about past productions and traditions? What unique roles do the
body, gender, and identity play in religious theatre?

The Association for Theatre in Higher Education 2005 Conference theme is
Bridging Communities, Engaging Creativity. In what ways does religious
theatre particularly address this theme? At specific historical moments,
religion and theatre have united to bridge communities, while at others they
have defined opposing communities. How has religion contributed to theatre
history and our understanding of performance? How can religious or spiritual
ways of knowing/seeing impact today’s theatrical environment and how we
bridge communities? How can considering “religion and theatre” engage
academic, performative, and personal creativity? The phrase “religion and
theatre” covers a multitude of discourses and possibilities. Papers from all
historical, cultural, religious, and performance contexts are welcome.

Please send your one-page abstract to Jill Stevenson at

affiliation, the title of your paper, and email address with your
submission. The deadline for abstracts is October 20th. You can find out
more about ATHE at www.athe.org.
