STIRRING THE MELTING POT: BRIDGING COMMUNITIES AND ENGAGING CREATIVITY IN AMERICAN
THEATRE

In 2005, ATHE will explore the theme of "building bridges" between diverse communities, traditional and contemporary schools of research and performance, and educators and students. How can we rethink the notion of "creativity," and how can that process help to illuminate the ways in which we use our art and scholarship to forge connections with our students and our audiences?

Since our earliest efforts to create a "democracy of glee," the American theatre has been a contested site for creating, combining, and challenging communities. How have theatre artists of the past exercised their creativity in the name of building bridges to new audiences or crafting new images of American identity? How are our contemporary playwrights, performers, and scholars putting their creativity at the service of the nation's increasingly diverse population? Where are we building our new bridges? Is it where we should be building them? What pedagogical practices will help us to build communities in the future? What scholarly approaches will help us to sustain links between the work that has come before and the work that remains to be done?

ATDS is an incorporated international organization promoting the study of the U.S. theatre and its relationships to diversified social and cultural life. It encourages the study of American plays, actors, designers, critics, audiences, and all others historically or contemporaneously associated with writing, producing, and enjoying U.S. drama, and it encourages the study of relationships among theatrical and dramatic forms in the U.S., the Americas at large, and non-Western Hemispheric cultures. ATDS strives to help scholars and practitioners build new bridges to the diverse communities which comprise this "melting pot that never melted" and in which we all write, teach, and perform.
