"Medieval and Early Modern Spatial Epistemologies"

The University of Michigan's Early Modern Colloquium (EMC) invites =
graduate students to submit papers for our 6th annual conference. As =
our title suggests, "Medieval and Early Modern Spatial Epistemologies" =
aims to foster interdisciplinary conversation about the various forms of =
spatial knowledge that emerge in the medieval and early modern =
periods.=A0 Potential issues around which the conference will be =
organized include but are not limited to:=20
=A0
-- travel, cartography, and geography
-- spaces and places of performance (the screen and the stage)
-- bodies and space
-- poetic space and perception
-- textual spaces and early print culture
-- visual material and the representation of space, place, and landscape
-- urban spaces and places
-- the development of natural history, medicine, and science
=A0
We are particularly interested in papers that explicitly address their =
own methodological engagement with the materials or archives explored. =
Additionally, Barbara Hodgdon (University of Michigan, author of The End =
Crowns All) will present a keynote address. =20
Abstracts with a cover letter are due by December 1, 2004.
Abstracts should be 150-250 words long and must include the applicant's =
name, academic affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail =
address.=A0 Final papers should not exceed 2500 words.=A0 Papers will be =
limited to 20 minutes.
