Your Black Eye (www.yourblackeye.org)
An e-Journal for Critical Consciousness
"You started to see things more clearly the moment you
were struck..."
A Call for Articles, Fiction, Film, and Poetry for the
First Issue
The YBE editors have been punched in the face by their
own preconceptions about politics, economics, and
culture, and encourage contributions from others
reflecting moments of striking critical clarity and
black eye encounters with the sublime.
Your Black Eye is a bruise, your bruise; nonetheless,
it allows you to see things in a new, critical way.
You may, for example share Your Black-Eye-perspective
on Iraq, the 2004 U.S. Election, deficit spending,
gender, sexuality, race, religion, education,
immigration, and labor issues, among others. YBE
welcomes critical examinations of popular culture,
contemporary values, and current affairs.
YBE encourages contributions from anyone, regardless
of academic, political, cultural, and economic
background. We want you to describe how you became
aware of your own critical consciousness. Your
submission may take literal or metaphorical forms; it
can be a statement of recognition (i.e., you see a
problem), confession (i.e., you see how you are part
of the problem), and/or resolution (i.e., you see a
way to solve the problem).
Submissions can be in most formats, including, but not
limited to:
Text: 5000 words or less, any genre, fiction,
non-fiction (argumentative essay, research paper),
poetry, etc., in a MS Word format.
Photos, Paintings, Sculpture, Drawings: (jpg, bmp,
gif)
Videos: 10 minutes or less in Real Player or Windows
Media Player formats.
In addition, book reviews, music reviews, movie
reviews, and event reviews are also encouraged, so
long as they fit within the context of the Black Eye
experience.
All submissions must be original work, not previously
published.
Deadline for submissions for the first volume: January
28, 2005.
Advance submissions encouraged.
