We have several great papers/panels shaping up on fantasy literature
(including Harry Potter, Philip Pullman's books, Madeleine L'Engle's and
Patricia Wrede's Dragon books), representations of girls in different era=

Betsy-Tacy series), Hispanic/Spanish children's books (representations of
characters and issues of literacy and reading pleasure), and children's
films/programming (Sesame Street, the VeggieTales, and Disney). We would
love to see more and other topics of interest to Children's and Young Adu=
lt
studies. =0D
 =0D

E-mail submissions preferred=0D
gypsyscholar_at_rgv.rr.com=0D
 =0D
Electronic submissions highly preferred to the above e-mail address. Plea=
se=0D
put "Popular Culture submission" in the subject line. Also please be awar=
e=0D
that the e-mail listed on the poster is only an alternate e-mail address,=
=0D
which is not as reliable as the preferred e-mail listed above.=0D
 =0D
Please note two special items:=0D
1) Graduate students are highly encouraged to submit and present. The=0D
Associations award monetary prizes between $100-$500 in several categorie=
s=0D
for a graduate paper presented at the conference. The deadline for awards=
=0D
is January 10, 2005. Visit the award page on the PCA/ACA web site:=0D
http://www.h-net.org/~swpca/Awards/awards.htm.=0D
 =0D
We ask that professors or others who have contact with graduate students=0D
please encourage graduate students to submit abstracts to any of the wide=
=0D
variety of areas sponsored at the PCA/ACA conference, and to seriously=0D
consider submitting a paper for an award.=0D
 =0D
2) Papers and panels may be presented in any language, as long as present=
ers=0D
provide 500 word summaries of their presentations to hand out to audience=
=0D
members. Presenters planning to deliver papers in a foreign language shou=
ld=0D
prepare to have 50 copies of summary for handing out during session.=0D
 =0D
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):=0D
Trends and the publishing explosion in the YA market -- especially the YA=
=0D
Market for young girls -- book series tied in to television series like
Buffy,=0D
Angel, Alias, and Charmed, but also series featuring strong female=0D
characters like those written by Tamora Pierce and the series penned by=0D
Francine Pascal (Fearless); these series and others have become a huge=0D
market, and have spawned countless web fan sites. It's an area worth=0D
looking into.=0D
 =0D
This could also include a historical look at the girls' series markets --=
=0D
Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Judy Bolton, Anne of Green Gables and Emily of=
=0D
New Moon, the Little House books, as well as others throughout the years;=
=0D
this is always a fascinating subject! Think of the possible studies of=0D
comparisons about the girls of yesteryear and today; what are the qualiti=
es=0D
and capabilities?=0D
 =0D
Any other popular and prolific children's, 'tween, and young adult author=
s=0D
who bear some study.=0D
 =0D
Films and television for children/young adults, including popular childre=
n
s/YA literature turned into popular films, like the recent Holes, Ella
Enchanted, or A Wrinkle in Time, or television shows specifically markete=
d=0D
to the 'tween and younger crowd, like Disney's KimPossible, Lizzie Maguir=
e,=0D
and That's So Raven, as well as the quite popular shows like Charmed, Joa=
n=0D
of Arcadia, and Smallville, which all boast large young adult and 'tween=0D
audiences=0D
 =0D
Toy culture: any aspect of toys: gender, socialization, cultural aspects,=
=0D
consumerism issues, etc.=0D
 =0D
Fantasy Literature, especially retold/modernized fairy tales in the=0D
tradition of Donna Jo Napoli and Robin McKinley, or series featuring=0D
children/young adult protagonists, like Philip Pullman's His Dark Materia=
ls=0D
Series (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass) or=0D
Harry Potter, or the Lemony Snicket series. Also consider the Artemis Fo=
wl
series,=0D
Cornelia Funke's books, or Lois Lowry's books.=0D
 =0D
Children's/YA Literature and the depiction/dissemination of cultural, eth=
nic=0D
  racial, and other minority groups (including sexual orientation and=0D
disabilities): depictions and issues about the Southwest (Hispanic and=0D
Native American), given our conference location would certainly be releva=
nt=0D
and welcome.=0D
 =0D
Any other topic related to children's and Young Adult literature, culture=
,=0D
and the intersection of these items with popular culture are welcome.=0D
 =0D
As I have done in the past, I will be offering a general discussion sessi=
on=0D
during which all Children's/YA participants (and general public) can gath=
er=0D
to discuss issues in Children's/YA literature and culture and to=0D
propose/suggest possible topics for the next conference. I will try to ha=
ve=0D
it scheduled in the middle of the conference so we can attract a large=0D
enough audience (and will attempt to have it scheduled so it does not=0D
conflict with any other Children's or YA session).=0D
 =0D
Presentations will be limited to between 15-17 minutes in order to allow =
for=0D
a vibrant discussion and question/answer session. Please adhere to this=0D
limitation since we are always on a tight time constraint and everyone=0D
deserves a chance to be heard. Please also send any Audio/Visual requests=
=0D
with abstracts. The conference can only supply the following: Cassette/CD=
=0D
player, Overhead projector/screen, TV/VCR combo (DVD players are limited =
to=0D
Film Area presentations), and Slide Project/Screen (presenter MUST bring =
own=0D
slide carousel).=0D
