Locating Asian Pacific America in the Midwest
Proposals are sought for a panel at the 2005 convention of the American
Studies Association in Washington, D.C. When we think of Asian Pacific
Americans, California, Hawai’i, and other parts of the west coast most
readily come to mind. The Hawai’ian plantation economy, California gold
rush, transcontinental railroad, Chinese Exclusion Acts, and Japanese
American internment have all put a west coast-based Asian American and
Pacific Islander history on the map. Because the seminal scholarship in
Asian American and Pacific Islander studies has privileged the west coast,
the presence of Asian Pacific America in other parts of the U.S. get
overlooked and elided. This proposed panel addresses Midwestern Asian
Pacific American histories, arts, and cultures. Papers are especially
encouraged to engage with and theorize issues of region in their analyses
of Asian American or Pacific Islander populations and/or literary/visual
arts in the Midwest. Please submit by 1/7/05 a 1-page proposal and brief
vita to Victor Jew, vjew_at_wisc.edu or Cynthia Wu, wu_at_macalester.edu.
