The critical discussion of American Literature has taken a sharp=20
transatlantic turn in recent years and Henry James, who straddled the Atlan=
tic =20
culturally and physically, is uniquely placed for any assessments of the va=
lidity of=20
such an approach. Proposals are invited for papers which deal with the issu=
e=20
of James and the transatlantic (however broadly interpreted), at the levels=
=20
of both his theory and practice as a writer. Areas might include, among =20
others, James=E2=80=99s shifting sense of what could be meant by a national=20=
literature, =20
American or otherwise, the specifically transatlantic dimension of his so-ca=
lled =20
international fiction, and the discourses of expatriation and exile, within=20=
a=20
transatlantic paradigm, at play in his work. Please send a title, an=20
abstract of no more than 250 words, and a brief vitae (including your insti=
tutional =20
affiliation) as an e-mail attachment in Word to _rawlings2000_at_aol.com_=20
(mailto:rawlings2000_at_aol.com) by 28 February 2005.
