(dis)junctions: theory reloaded (april 8-9, 2005)
Searching For the Real Shakespeare

This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be held at (dis)junctions:
theory reloaded at the University of California Riverside's 12th Annual
Humanities Graduate Conference on April 8-9, 2005.

>From the outside, the academy is often assumed to be the bearer of
tradition, yet from our perspective it seems that the mass media puts a
greater premium on authenticity, especially concerning "cultural
authorities" such as Shakesepeare. How does this relate to:
- Shakespeare's own level of concern with authenticity regarding sources,
especially that of Roman and English history
- The percieved authenticity of "modern dress" performances, or any time
period between today and the time period of Shakespeare (or of the play's
setting, if applicable)
- "Ethnic authenticity," regarding performances of ostensibly white European
characters by actors of color
- Authenticity of speech, concerning different accents, styles of acting
from "realist" to impressionist
- How theory undermines or in some cases even reinforces notions of
authenticity
- Issues of intended audience, pandering, special effects and spectacle,
high and low culture and the commonplaces involved
- Vestiges of traidtional academic disdain for performance as inherently
inauthentic reading, versus the commonplace that Shakespeare never meant to
publish his plays
- High school productions and the authenticity of the inexperienced
