Races, Ethnicities and Nationalisms
A Panel Discussion:
At the Eighth International Literature and Humanities Conference,
INSCRIPTIONS '05: an arts and culture conference and festival
at Eastern Mediterranean University
in Famagusta, on the island of Cyprus
May 12th - 13th, 2005

We invite submissions for a Panel Discussion exploring how conceptions
of race, ethnicity and nationalism enter into social, cultural, =
economic,=20
political, and legal constructions/deconstructions of identity at our =
turn=20
of the century. We welcome presentations dealing with specific sites=20
and circumstances as well as broader theoretical/philosophical =
engagements.

Some possible topic areas (others are welcome):

-"imagined communities" (Anderson) and the "clash of civilizations"=20
    (Huntington)=20
-irredentism, secession, and the boundaries of the nation-state=20
-"representative democracies" and the problems of political/legal=20
    representation=20
-The Politics of Friendship (Derrida) and The Inclusion of the Other=20
    (Habermas)=20
-group differences, individualism, and discourses of patriotism=20
-class structure, labor regulations, and race/ethnicity=20
-Critical Race Theory and "rights talk"=20
-gender, race, ethnicity and violence; the problems of the margin=20
-genocide, population transfer, and the international legal status of=20
    the refugee=20
-Orientalism, cultural imperialism (Said), and globalization=20
-minority rights and the concept of political equality=20
-ethno-linguistic or religious nationalisms and modes of=20
    assimilation/exclusion=20
-"white mythologies" (Derrida, Young) and "dissemiNations"=20
    (Bhabha)=20
-centered discourses, stereotyping, profiling, xenophobia=20
-"progress" vs. "preservation": the problems of ethnology and=20
    museumization=20
-citizenship, and questions of local/international power and=20
    resource sharing=20
-NGOs, quangos, and national/international policy-making=20
-myths and symbols of race, ethnicity and nationalism=20
-globalization and national identity: ideologies of origin and destiny=20
-subaltern discourses (Spivak) and cultures of resistance=20
-ethnic conflict and the logic of self-determination/sovereignty=20
-the efficacy of military/economic sanctions, humanitarian intervention, =

    and peacekeeping=20
-international law, sanctions, and obligations: problems of enforcement=20
    and compliance=20
-the role of intellectuals and/or institutions in shaping race,=20
    ethnicity, and nationalism=20

Prospective panelists are invited to send 250-word abstracts/proposals=20
for 15-20 minute presentations on any aspect of these areas to=20
