Panel Six: New Approaches to Modernism
Chair: Professor Ronald Bush (Oxford).
This panel will focus on new directions in the study of modernism in the
aftermath of critiques from postmodernists, poststructuralists, feminists,
historicists, and others. Often the new scholarship studies modernism as a
cultural phenomenon and examines its roots in economic and social
institutions. While restoring an interest in the aesthetic value of
modernist work, it also explores such matters as modernist marketing and
publishing, the historical and biographical influences on modernism, its
relation to popular literature, and its implications for issues of gender
and ideology. Send half-page abstracts by March 31, 2005, to Professor
Ronald Bush, St. John's College, Oxford, OX1 3JP, United Kingdom.
