Vernacular Colloquium 2005: Tourism and Travel Area

The Travel and Tourism area of the 2005=20
Vernacular Colloquium welcomes proposals (in=20
Spanish or English) for panels and papers on=20
tourism and travel in the Americas and Spain.=20
Special emphasis will be placed on work that=20
takes into account the conference's theme,=20
"Affirming Human Values in a Time of Terror."=20
While terror has received a great deal of global=20
attention in recent years, terrorism has been a=20
central concern in much of the Spanish-speaking=20
world since the late twentieth century. We=20
especially welcome work that considers travel and=20
tourism vis-a-vis terrorism or the threat of=20
terror.
Additional areas of interest include, but are not=20
limited to, connections between travel and=20
tourism and the following topics:
- Authenticity
- Poverty
- Gender and sexuality
- The environment
- The everyday
- Globalization/Neoliberalism
- Security/Surveillance
- Human rights
- The Borderlands
- Indigenismo
- Visual culture
- Literature
- Popular culture
- The state
Please send 200-300 word abstracts (as email=20
attachments) along with working titles, and=20
academic affiliations by April 30, 2005 to Teresa=20
