CALL FOR PAPERS

INTERNATIONAL MUSICOLOGICAL COLLOQUIUM BRNO 2005

MUSIC AND WAR: "Inter arma silent musae", or "Arma virumque cano"?

SEPTEMBER 26-28, 2005

The Institute of Musicology at the Masaryk University Brno (Czech
Republic) will host its annual musicological colloquium once more in 2005.
It will concentrate on the subject "Music and War".

As Terry Eagleton has said, "In Bosnia, culture is not just what you put
on the cassette player; it is what you kill for". So the topic "music and
war" cannot be limited to the study of bugle calls and military music. We
would like to concentrate on more general aspects of music as shaped by
war: the composition, performance and reception of music in the context of
war; the use of music in wartime for militaristic or pacifist propaganda,
or opposition to such use; notions of the shaping of music history by
reactions of generations to great military conflicts. And the historical
field is definitely not limited by the 60th anniversary of the end of
World War II in 2005. Papers dealing with music in the Hundred Years War,
the Thirty Years War, the Napoleonic era, World War I or the Vietnam war
are equally welcome. So are papers about representations of music and war
in art and literature.

All prospective participants should submit a 300-word abstract by 31 May
2005, together with a brief curriculum vitae, and their postal and e-mail
addresses.

Presentations of papers should not exceed 20 minutes. Papers will be
accepted in English and German. There are no interpreting facilities
available in the conference rooms.

The active participants will be offered accommodation in an international
hotel free of charge. The papers will be published in print.

Further information will be progressively available on the web page of the
Institute of Musicology of the Masaryk University Brno:
