CFP: Who is responsible for the village? (grad) (3/1/05; 4/1/05-4/2/05)
Who is responsible for the village?
First Annual English Graduate Organization Conference
Western Illinois University-Macomb
April 1 - 2, 2005
CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION:
Marshall McLuhan, author of Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,
predicts the impact of technology on the village. Hillary Clinton, New York
senator, gives a human face to inhabitants of a global village. M. Night
Shyamalan’s 2004 film, The Village, explores the psychology of its village’s
citizens and audience.
This conference appeals to the community of writers, teachers, and critics of
texts to define our villages today, and to discuss how our sense of these
villages influence, enrage, or inspire society. What are the conditions in our
villages, and are we being effective in a cosmopolitan neighborhood? We will
explore definitions of villages during two workshops at the conference.
- How does hierarchy in the classroom affect these villages?
- In what ways does the English Department form villages and/or interact with
other villages?
- What role does an office like a writing center perform within villages?
- What is essential or nonessential curriculum for these villages?
- In what ways does emphasis on composition form or affect villages?
- What literature raises the thoughts and concerns of these villages?
- What is the role of theory in these villages?
