I invite proposals for this year's M/MLA convention to be held at The
Historic Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, November 10-13.

M/MLA Section: Modern Literature

Panel Title: "Mothers, Maidens, Murderesses: the Changed/ing Roles of
Women in Modern Literature"

In response to this panel title, Virginia Woolf may well have said, "The
title women and modern literature might mean, and you may have meant it
to mean, women and what they are like; or it might mean women and the
modern literature that they write; or it might mean women and the modern
literature that is written about them; or it might mean that somehow all
three are inextricably mixed together" (adapted from A Room of One's
Own).

How have our perceptions of women changed in the last thirty years and
how do male and female authors respond to such changes? Do we see more
realistic renderings of women in modern literature?

Please send 200-word abstract and a short bio, by 1 April 2005, to
