Panel Title: Reading In History
Early reader-response criticism is one prime example of "the exile of history in literary study." In recent years, however, ahistorical theoretical claims about an "implied reader" have given way to historical reconstructions of individual readers, reading communities, and reading practices. This session invites papers from those working on the history of reading. Papers may focus on matters of literary history (how does the study of reading illuminate a particular text, or writer, or literary-historical moment?) or on matters of methodology (how can we better investigate reading practices?).

Please submit queries and 300-word abstracts by April 15 to Bonnie Gunzenhauser, preferably via email: <mailto:bgunzenhauser_at_roosevelt.edu <mailto:bgunzenhauser_at_roosevelt.edu> >
