Pulp Modernism: Popular Print Culture and the Avant Garde
Currently seeking papers for a panel on modernism and popular print culture.
In the past few years, the traditional definition of modernism as elite or restricted has come under revision. Yet few studies consider the movement in relationship to either contemporary popular fiction or the overall scene of mass publishing. This is despite many examples of modernist's work being available in popular venues at the time. Papers should consider either manifestations of modernism within popular print in the first half of the 20th century, such as popular reprint magazines, pulp magazines, and early paperbacks, or the modernist reliance -- possibly as critique, patronage, or allusion -- upon such forms or literature.
Please send Abstracts and C.V.s to Dr. David M. Earle at durl_at_sbcglobal.net by April 30th.
