Remembering Identity: The Impact of WWI on Expatriate Fictional and
Autobiographical Memory

Memory is inextricably linked to ideas of time and history. Consider that
memories, while occurring in the present, involve reconsideration and even
revision of past events or that written history is sometimes described as a
creative act because it is built on the memories of individuals. Expatriate
modernist writers such as Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, and
F. Scott Fitzgerald reveal an understanding of the flawed nature of memory
as it is highlighted by the catastrophic effects of WWI. These authors have
a special relationship with modern questions of identity, alienation, and
isolation by virtue of seeking a life outside of their national cultures.
Papers should explore this special relationship by addressing expatriate
writers’ treatment of modern concerns like memory, history, and identity.
