Indigenous Issues in Australian Universities: Teaching, Research, Support
VENUE: Brisbane campus, Australian Catholic University
DATE: 16-17 June 2005.
The growing interest in Indigenous studies and increasing numbers of=20
Indigenous students attending Australian universities is a positive=20
development that presents challenges to the tertiary sector. The=20
International Australian Studies Association (InASA) and the Weemala=20
Indigenous Unit of the McAuley campus of ACU is holding a 2-day symposium a=
ddressing, but not limited to, the following issues:=20
=B7 case studies of successful programs;
=B7 Indigenising the curriculum and Indigenous pedagogies;
=B7 the development of Indigenous research and its epistemes;
=B7 the incorporation of Indigenous knowledges into the academy;=20
=B7 Indigenous governance and leadership in universities;
=B7 the role of Indigenous support units and research centres;
=B7 issues for Indigenous tertiary students at undergraduate or postg=
raduate=20
level;
=B7 gender and age factors for Indigenous students;
=B7 non-Indigenous resistance and responsibility in the academy;
=B7 the role of cultural awareness/safety training;
=B7 the impact of internationalisation, the history wars, contemporar=
y=20
Australian politics and whiteness studies on Indigenous studies;
=B7 the relationships between academic cultures and Indigenous cultur=
es;
=B7 the relationship between Indigenous studies and Australian studie=
s;
=B7 university-community relationships.
We are seeking proposals of 100 words for papers, panels, performances or=20
yarning sessions by academics, students and community members.
