Panel Proposal
Modernist Studies Association Annual Conference
November 3-6
Chicago, IL

Deconstruction and Critical Theory are two intellectual tendencies
commonly associated with the phenomenon of "theory" in the American
academy. Common offspring of Nietzsche's antifoundationalism, both of
these theoretical models share a suspicion of the totalizing impulse that
characterizes much of the Western metaphysical tradition. Yet,
deconstruction and Critical Theory also constitute distinct philosophical
itineraries and legacies; for example, Derrida's engagement with
Saussurian linguistics or Heidegger is far removed from Adorno's attempt
to reinvent dialectical thought. This panel aims to define points of
intersection as well as points of divergence between these two currents by
examining their relationship to such areas as aesthetic theory, political
theory, and psychoanalysis.
