Young Researchers Exchange Workshop 2005¡¡¡Ø<Japan> as Image¡Ù
Call for papers
Note: Papers in English are welcome, however, most of the discussion will be in Japanese and we cannot guarantee the presence of someone able to interpret at all times. Please do not enter if you are not in Japan on July 25th/26th and/or able to attend the workshop by your own means.
This year too, like in 2003 and 2004, we will be hosting a Workshop Young Researchers Exchange with [<Japan> as Image] as a theme. In this workshop we will address the consumption of Japanese culture abroad, the transformation of Japan¡Çs images and the influence of this change on the transformation of Japan¡Çs self-image, the cross-boundary and flowing nature of culture, etc.
The papers should be in the ¡Ædiscussion paper¡Ç format (see below for details). The other participants and audience (registration required) will read the papers in advance and will participate in the discussion afterward.
With¡ÆYoung Researchers¡Ç we mean scholars in graduate school, or those who have finished their degrees.¡¡Below are more concrete details.
Date: Saturday, June 25th and Sunday, June 26th.
Place: Osaka University Nakanoshima Centre (provisionak)
¡ÚEntry content¡Û
¡¡We are looking for papers with content pertaining to the following:
¡¦For a session called [<Japan> consummated in Globalism]
¡¦Those dealing with problems occurring overseas regarding transformations of <Japanese> culture.
¡¦Having Japanese popular culture as (part of) their object of study.
Discussion paper deadline: May 31st
Volume: About 10 A4 pages, reasonably readable format/font (about 10.000 words).
¡ÚEntry requirement¡Û
¡¡Please give us your name, affiliation (independent scholars are welcome too), a means of getting in touch (address, phone number or email address), the subject of your argument, and an abstract in about 400 words by April 28th.

About the discussion paper format.
¡¡In the <Japan> as Image research group, and in line with the objectives of the 21st Century COE project (1. Encouraging young researchers, 2. establishing academic networks) we will base discussion on discussion papers.¡¡These discussion papers can be regarded as papers that aren¡Çt quite finished, not yet for publication. After the workshop, we would like entrants to brush up their papers adding to them points brought up in discussion with the audience.

¡ Acceptance
¡¡Basically, the call is for papers that are as good as finished but could do with some more input. The content should be connected to the <Japan> as Image theme, and if possible, should be in Japanese.
¢ Limited access to the papers
¡¡Accepted papers will be uploaded to a site where only the other participants in the workshop and the registered audience can get access to read them. All attendants of the workshop should read the papers in advance.
£ Discussion during the workshop
¡¡There will be discussion based on the papers during the workshop; depending on the contents.
