Passionate Intensities: The Construction of Postmodern Fundamentalisms
Nassau Community College is renewing its Annual Multidisciplinary
Conference with a timely, albeit distressing, topic of global concern. NCC
is soliciting proposals for twenty-minute presentations for its one-day
conference on Friday, November 4, 2005.
Many of us had envisioned a postmodern world in which diverse
communities and beliefs coexisted in peace. Instead, we are faced with a
post 9/11 world in which political, cultural, ethnic, and religious
beliefs have developed into fundamentalist constructions at war with each
other--and all to often the war is real and bloody.
We invite you to take diverse, multidisciplinary approached to the topic.
"Passionate intensities" suggests that there is little middle ground and few
compromises between parties. The players may be cultural, such as Christian
and Muslim, but you may find yourself thinking of other antagonisms:
scientific research versus global expansion, postmodern artists versus
coservative endowments, civil rights versus security limitations, personal
rights versus the wishes of the community.
