FROM THE DIRECTOR: In 2005 we celebrate 10 years since the founding
of what has become
?ne of the nation? most
important gatherings about literature by Hispanic women?(Steve
Bennet, Express-News, 7-14-04).
We will discuss and celebrate
three decades of Latina Literature in the U.S. Why three decades?
Because the ?rossing over?of
U.S. Latino literature into the
awareness of the general American reader began in the 1980? with the
publication of Sandra
Cisneros?The House on Mango Street
by Arte P?blico Press in 1984. The widespread popularity of this
book, especially among
educators in desperate need of Latina texts suitable for high school
study, led to its eventual
publication by Random House, to the
awarding of a McArthur ?enius?fellowship to a Latina writer, and
eventually to the acceptance of
the existence of a significant
Latina/o literary market by the mainstream publishing houses of New
York. Cisneros is recognized as
the one who opened the gates
of the mainstream for many Latino writers to follow. Hence,
representing the decade of the 1980?,
our guest writer will be Sandra
Cisneros. For the decade of the 1990? Pat Mora, Chicana poet
extraordinaire and a pioneering Latina
children? author, will read her
poetry and participate in panels. Representing the first decade of
the 21st
Century, Alicia Gaspar de Alba will read from her new novel, Desert
Blood, about the murders of over
300 Latina women in the
U.S./Mexican border town of Juarez. Also a 21st Century author,
Cuban-American Ana Men?ndez
will read from her works Loving
Che and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd. The conference will be a
forum for issues of literature,
art, identity, ethnicity and gender,
continuing as it has from the beginning to focus awareness on these
important issues.
