                  KNOWLEDGE, TRUTH, HUMAN CONDITION

'Reserving judgements is a matter of infinite hope."
F.Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby,

'No created mind can by any means possess the capacity to understand all, but
as soon as it has discovered a small fragment of what it is seeking, it again
sees other things that must be sought for.'
                                                                        Origen, On First Principles

Following the success of the last three PGRA conferences, Infinite Hope aims
to provide a forum for students from diverse disciplines, across the CCCUC
research community and from the wider research and global community, to
discuss their PhD research and experience. The theme - 'Infinite Hope:
Research and the Quest for Truth' - should be considered in the formulation of
papers.

Infinite Hope is organised only by research students, and seeks to provide a
friendly and creative forum for the general public to meet and speak with
those beyond the charmed 'curtains' of 'the university', as well as a space
for researchers to meet and exchange ideas.

Criteria for review

Although the theme may provoke or direct thought, participants should be aware
that they will be addressing an audience who may not be subject specialists in
their areas. Contributors may therefore, wish to consider the following
criteria before formulating papers:

1.In papers related to methodology speakers may address ethical and
methodological dilemmas encountered or problems involved in designing research
or collecting data. They may also wish to consider vital lessons learned
through the research process.

2.Papers presenting research findings might consider the related, enquiry
process within the relevant theoretical framework.

3. One of the conference's concerns is to connect the 'critical' and the
'creative' imaginations. Speakers are encouraged to introduce subjects
relating to both.

4. Speakers are encouraged to 'contextualise' their research. That is, those
at a more advanced stage of their work, might wish to place their findings in
a broader spectrum than their own discipline alone.

Length of papers

Papers should be: 20 minutes for presentation with 10 minutes for questions or
30 minutes for presentation with 15 minutes for
questions.

Posters

Speakers who do not wish to make a formal presentation, may submit an abstract
for a 'poster'. That is, they will be given boards on which to pin up material
relating to their research, which those attending the conference will be able
to look at in the Quiet Lounge.

Abstracts
Please submit a 250-400 word abstract. The above criteria, where helpful,
should be considered in formulating it. Abstracts should be submitted by
Friday 13th May, 2005 and should be sent to:

Feng Gao and Pri Ghosh, pgra_at_cant.ac.uk A copy should also be sent to: The
Graduate School, Infinite Hope 2005, c/o Ashleigh Stewart, Canterbury Christ
Church University college, Canterbury, CT11QU, U.K.
