CFP: Short Story: American Neighborhoods (5/27/05; M/MLA 11/10/05-11/13/05)
The Short Story section for the 2005 M/MLA Convention in Milwaukee welcomes
paper proposals on the topic "American Short Story and American Neighborhoods."
How have authors of short fiction represented small towns, suburbs, and urban
centers? What is the relationship between story and place? How have American
neighborhoods and the American short story evolved over the course of the 20th-
century? How might the work of planners and geographers help us analyze the
role storytelling and fictional literature play in American neighborhoods and
communities?
Any paper examining short stories and American spaces is welcome, but special
consideration will be given to proposals that take into account the
conference's general theme, "History, Memory, and Exile." Please send 200-
word abstracts to keith-wilhite_at_uiowa.edu by Friday, May 27, 2005.
