CFP: Nativism in the Modern(ist) West (6/5/05; WLA, 10/19/05-10/23/05)
Does Walter Benn Michaels’ argument about modernism and nativism, which emphasizes high modernist works located and written in the east, the south, and in Europe, apply to or play out differently in literature of the west during the modernist era? Of particular interest would be considerations of immigrants and ‘natives’ in Willa Cather’s western novels, but examinations of any western literature or films dating from 1915-1935 would be welcome.
