CFP: The Changing Face of Europe (6/15/05; 10/7-8/05)

Brigham Young University’s Center for the Study of
Europe (CSE) is pleased to announce "The Changing Face
of Europe," the second annual Rocky Mountain European
Scholars Consortium (RMESC) on Thursday and Friday,
October 7-8, 2005 at Brigham Young University in
Provo, Utah.

This multidisciplinary conference focuses on European
topics, providing a challenging forum for the
examination and evaluation of the shifting shape and
meaning of Europe. Scholars from various disciplines
are invited to share their work and to interact with
colleagues from throughout the Intermountain West.
Last year’s inaugural conference involved 32
presentations and drew over 60 scholars from 19
institutions ranging from University of Northern Texas
to Utah Valley State College and New Mexico State
University to Idaho State University.

This year’s conference theme is “The Changing Face of
Europe.” Scholars of all rank, from full professors to
graduate students, and from all areas of discipline
are invited to propose papers, presentations, forums,
and workshops on the following areas:
--European history
--European languages
--Europe and the arts
--European popular culture
--European identities
--Paradoxes of Europe
--The European Union
--Issues of sovereignty
--Nation-states and nationalist movements
--Transatlantic relations
--Globalization and Europe
--Immigration in Europe
--Social issues (education; justice; social welfare;
religion)
--European economics
--European regional stability
--The study of Europe in the Rocky Mountain region
Presentations concerning other relevant topics will
also be reviewed for acceptance.

200 word abstracts of individual papers (including
each paper prepared for panels) and 500 word
descriptions of panels, forums, and workshops must be
submitted electronically by, Wednesday, June 15, 2005.

All proposals will be peer reviewed. Contributors will
be notified of acceptance by July 15, 2005. Select
papers accepted for and presented at the conference
will be published in an ISBN e-Book.

Each submission should include:
--Title of presentation in CAPS
--Topic area (see list above)
--Presentation format
--Name(s) of presenter (s)
--Institutional affiliation(s) (including department)
--Address, phone number, and email address of
presenter for individual paper OR of
panel/forum/workshop organizer
--Abstract

Electronic abstract submissions should be cut and
pasted into the body of the email text or attached as
a Word or Rich Text Format file. Send electronic
