Crossing borders: nationalism and protean identities in the Civil Wars
and Commonwealth
Panel proposal for GEMCS 2005: Crossing Borders
Abstract deadline: 7/15/05
This proposed panel for GEMCS 2005 in San Antonio aims to build on
recent work on theories of identity in the early modern period by
considering the various ways in which national and regional identities
were constructed and reconstructed under the political pressures
exerted by civil war. How were national and regional identities
defined and redefined during a time of crisis when incursions across
defined physical borders frequently occurred? How did English,
Scottish, Welsh or Irish writers react to events in England, Ireland,
Scotland and Wales and to what degree did their rhetoric affect how
the people of these nations were defined? Was there a static sense of
national identity during this period or did the fluctuating political
circumstances alter perceptions of the other, creating an unstable and
volatile identity? What role did intra-regional differences between
writers of different political parties, Royalist and Parliamentarian
play in the creation of identity/identities? Was there a totalizing
view of other regions/nations or was the perception of the other far
more complex and fragmentary, thereby reflecting the politicized and
fractured nature of conflict? Papers on both dramatic and non-
dramatic texts welcomed.
Possible topics:
Anti-Scottish drama
Royalist and Parliamentarian newsbook reports of events in Ireland,
Scotland, Wales or England
Accounts of Charles II’s coronation in Scotland
Accounts of trials of Presybterians such as Christopher Love
Welsh narratives and/or English representations of Welsh identity
Newsbook reports of the Irish massacre and the continuous conflict
between Parliamentary forces and the Irish
Pamphlets about Irish influence on English politics
Milton’s Tenure of Kings and Magistrates
Proposals on other topics related to the panel theme are also welcome.
