Panel Proposal for GEMCS 2005, San Antonio
Abstract Deadline; July 1, 2005
Desperately seeking the Duchess Mazarin!
We are seeking additional participants for a cross-disciplinary panel
on the 17th-century femme fatale Hortense Mancini, Duchess Mazarin,
which will consider her as a case study for women "crossing borders"
in the early modern period. The proposed panel will explore in
various contexts how such a figure was perceived by her
contemporaries -- and is investigated today by scholars -- as
crossing borders: in a geographical/nationalistic sense, in a
gendered sense, and in a disciplinary sense ("portraits" of the
Duchess Mazarin and contemporary commentaries bridge text-based,
musical, and visual media). The panel will also invite audience
participation through the discussion of the Duchess Mazarin as a
figure for other such women whose lives and representations are the
subject of other current scholarship.
