I am seeking papers
for a proposed panel
for the Western
Literature
Association
Conference (Los
Angeles, 10/
19-10/23/05).
In light of the
conference theme,
"Cultures of
Memory
and Forgetting In
the American
West," I'm
particularly
interested in how
our collective
cultural memory of
the
Western
experience(s) has
been shaped via
contemporary
children's and
young adult
fiction.
Some possible
topics include, but
are by no means
limited to:
a) What cultural
trends, anxieties,
values, etc. might
account for the
profusion of novels
about the Western
experience during
the past decade?
b) How are
minority/
immigrant voices
represented in
contemporary
children's/YA
novels about the
American
West?
c) How do these
contemporary
novels reaffirm/
contradict/
question/ignore
earlier "classic"
children's novels
such as Wilder's
Little House series
and Brink's Caddie
Woodlawn?
d) What cultural
space do children
occupy in
contemporary
representations of
the American West?
If you are
interested in
presenting a 20-
minute paper for
this panel,
please send a paper
title, one paragraph
abstract, and
contact info to

by June 12.
