UPDATED CALL FOR PAPERS
For SEMINAR ONE ONLY ("Poetic Translation in a Global Context") of
The Association of Literary Scholars and Critics'
Eleventh Annual Conference
Hotel Marlowe
Cambridge, Massachusetts
November 4-6, 2005
N.B. ALL SEMINARS ARE FULL EXCEPT SEMINAR ONE, POETIC TRANSLATION IN A
GLOBAL CONTEXT, WHICH IS HEREBY REISSUED BY A NEW CHAIRMAN, PROFESSOR
CHRISTOPHER MAURER OF BOSTON UNIVERSITY, AND WITH A NEW APPLICATION DEADLINE
OF AUGUST 1, 2005.
Description of Seminar Format and General Guidelines:
The 2005 Conference of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics
(ALSC) in Cambridge, Massachusetts will feature a series of three concurrent
seminars designed to increase participation of younger scholars in the
conference. Modeled on what has worked successfully for such organizations
as the Shakespeare Association of America and the Modernist Studies
Association, these three seminars will each be led by a distinguished member
of the ALSC. Association membership is required for participation in the
conference. Student memberships start as low as $15. Standard new
memberships start as low as $25. For details on how to join the ALSC, visit
our website at www.bu.edu/literary. Secure online forms for membership
application and conference registration are also available there.
The conference will be held from Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November
6, 2005, at the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our keynote
speaker will be Norman Mailer. The seminars will take place on Saturday,
November 5. And our newest feature, the ALSC Coffeehouse Seminar, will run
from 8:30 to 10 p.m. on Friday, November 4.
At the time of this posting, the Poetic Translation Seminar has 14 remaining
openings. Successful applicants will receive an official letter of
invitation to the conference and will be listed in the program. Once
accepted, participants will write very brief position papers (2-4 pages,
double-spaced), which they will circulate among themselves and read prior to
the conference. The listing of the titles of these papers in the conference
program should help participants in their efforts to obtain funding to the
conference from their home institutions. Graduate students and junior
faculty are especially encouraged to apply for these seminars, but senior
scholars are eligible as well. Modest travel stipends will be available to a
limited number of seminar participants and awarded on a
first-come-first-served basis (until our limited funds are exhausted).
Primary consideration will be given to those who are most in need. Two
documents are required to demonstrate need: (1) official notice (printed on
organizational letterhead) that a home institution has denied funding to
attend the ALSC Conference; and (2) a brief personal statement of need (a
single paragraph will do). All stipend applications are vetted by the ALSC
Conference Committee. Again, please note that one must be an ALSC member to
participate in the seminar program. Applications (hard copy only) should be
sent to:
ALSC CONFERENCE TRAVEL STIPEND PROGRAM
650 Beacon Street, Suite 510
Boston, MA 02215
The ALSC office must receive your application by September 30.
The details of this seminar are as follows:
Seminar One: Poetic Translation in a Global Context
Chair: Christopher Maurer (Modern Languages and Literatures, Boston
University).
This seminar invites papers, two to four pages (double-spaced), that explore
problems of poetic translation. Essays on non-western authors whose works
are often taught in courses in world literature-e.g. from Arabic, Persian,
Chinese, and Indian literature-are especially welcome. Send abstracts of no
more than one paragraph (or a half a page) in length, by August 1, 2005, to
Professor Christopher Maurer, Department of Modern Foreign Languages and
Literatures, Boston University, 718 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215;
chmaurer_at_bu.edu. Please also send a second copy of your proposal to the ALSC
office at alsc_at_bu.edu.
