CALL FOR PAPERS

The 11th Biennial Symposium on the Literatures and Cultures of the
Asia-Pacific Region will be held from 7 to 10 December 2005 at the NUS
Centre for the Arts, National University of Singapore.

The first Symposium of the series was held in 1982 at the University of
Western Australia, pioneering a new field of studies on cross-cultural
and cross-literary perceptions and responses in the Asia-Pacific region.
After 23 years, the subject continues to fascinate and intrigue experts
and students of new Englishes.

The theme for the forthcoming Symposium is "Literatures in Englishes and
Their Centres: Perceiving from the Inside". The internal dynamics of the
literatures in Englishes of India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan,
Malaysia and Singapore, in terms of their specific cultures, societies
and politics, tend to be overlooked. How do we define literary
'centres', characterise interactions between English and
national/regional languages, and derive concepts, terminology and
paradigms for comparative purposes?

We welcome offers of papers to be presented at the Symposium.
Expressions of interest for early registration should be sent by 15 July
2005 to cfasymposium_at_nus.edu.sg. The attached brochure on the Symposium,
including the Registration Form. may also be found at
