Call for Papers for the Jean-Paul Sartre Centennial Celebration (1905-2005)

The Department of French & Italian and the Interdisciplinary Humanities
Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara seek submissions for
a centennial celebration of the birth of J.-P. Sartre: “Jean-Paul Sartre and
the Golden Age of Saint-Germain-des-Prés” (Dec. 1-2, 2005). Submissions are
welcome in the following categories. Suggested topics below are by no means
exclusive:

--Sartre & Art (suggested topics: Sartre on Tintoretto, Giacometti, Calder,
David Hare etc.)
--Sartre & Black Studies (suggested topics: Négritude, Colonialism etc.)
--Sartre & Comparative Literature (Sartre on Faulkner, Dos Passos, Sartre
vs. Camus etc.)
--Sartre & Film Studies (suggested topics: The Freud Scenario, adaptation
and influences of Sartre’s works)
--Sartre & French literature (suggested topics: Sartre and literary
groupings by generation, Sartre and Committed Literature, etc.)
--Sartre & History (Questions of meaning and methodology in History, Sartre
vs. Foucault)
--Sartre & Music (suggested topics: Sartre on jazz, on Schoenberg vs.
Stravinsky)
--Sartre & Philosophy (suggested topics: Being and Nothingness, essay on
Kierkegaard, Sartre vs. Wittgenstein, etc.)
--Sartre and Psychology (suggested topics: Existential Psychoanalysis,
Sartre vs. Freud etc.)
--Sartre & Religious Studies (suggested topics: Anti-Semite and Jew etc.)
--Sartre & Sociology (suggested topics: A critique of Dialectical Reason,
Question of Method etc.)

Guest speakers will include Michel Sicard (University of Paris-1) and Annie
Cohen-Solal (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris)

Guidelines for submissions:
Please send 2 hard copies + 1 electronic copy to:

Submissions should be approximately 20 minutes in length and in English.
Deadline: Sept. 15. Successful applicants will be notified by Oct. 1.

The current joint sponsors of the centennial Sartre celebration are:
The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UCSB
The French Cultural Services in Los Angeles
The College of Creative Studies at UCSB
UCSB’s Department of French and Italian as well as the Departments of Black
Studies; History of Art and Architecture; Germanic, Slavic and Semitic
Studies; Music; Philosophy & Religious Studies.
A performance of Sartre’s famous play, No Exit, will be performed by
Dramatic Arts.
A musical event will take place around the time of the celebration (Jazz).
An exhibition of Sartre’s manuscripts will be held at the College of
Creative Studies.
