The English Department at the University of Sheffield is proud to be hosting the
annual postgraduate BAAS conference in this, the 50th anniversary year of BAAS.
Papers of 20 minutes or panels are warmly invited on all aspects of research
relating to the United States of America. Proposals may address areas
including, but not limited, to literature, history, film, politics, language,
pedagogy, and music.

Postgraduates and academics at the start of their careers are particularly
encouraged to respond. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of
the refereed journal, US Studies Online. This one-day conference will be a
useful and enjoyable opportunity to exchange ideas in a relaxed environment.
Workshops on teaching and publishing will also run, and the day will end with
an evening of live jazz. General information about the conference is available
at the following website: www.shef.ac.uk/english/events/americaactually.html

Proposals of 250-300 words should be submitted before 1st October 2005. Every
attempt will be made to accommodate early applicants who require a decision
before the closing date. Please send proposals by email or post to the
conference co-ordinators, Elizabeth Boyle and Anne-Marie Evans, at the
