Staging Shakespeare’s King Richard II : Performance and Perspective

This Conference will focus on King Richard II as a visual play (with
trompe-l’oeil, distorting mirrors, anamorphoses-like perceptions and
perspective effects) and its various stagings.
How is the specular network which shapes the play made visible on stage?
How, for example, is the famous mirror scene represented? More generally,
does staging imply a choice of history perspective? Or how can staging
present Ernest B. Gilman’s “right view” and “wry view”?
Analyses of stagings by Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, Deborah Warner and
other stage directors may help examine these questions from different
viewpoints.
Proceedings should be edited by the Presses Universitaires de Rennes.
Deadline for submissions: 30 October 2005.
