BAAS 2006 Postgraduate Study Day

School of American & Canadian Studies,
University of Nottingham

Saturday 18th November, 2006

This one-day interdisciplinary conference will explore the many ways in whi=
ch America(s) is negotiated and represented, both within American Studies a=
nd other interrelated fields.=20

We encourage papers from a range of disciplines to include literature, hist=
ory, film, cultural studies, politics, sociology, and ethnography that expl=
ore the contested readings of America(s). We would like to emphasise that w=
e welcome papers which focus on not only the United States but also Canada,=
 South / Central America, and the Caribbean.

Areas for discussion may include, but are not limited to:

Identities
Nationalism and Transnationalism
Post-colonialism
Globalisation
Multiculturalism and Ethnicity
Neoconservatism and Foreign Policy
The War on Terror=20
Social Capital
Gender
Ecocriticism
Popular Culture
The =91New=92 American Studies

Papers should be 15 minutes in duration. Please send proposals of up to 300=
 words with a short biography and institutional affiliation to Ceri Gorton =
by the 1st September 2006.=20

The conference fee will be =A315, including break-time refreshments and lun=
ch.
