CFP: Poetry Matters: English in Education (06/01/07, 09/01/07 journal
issue)
The place of poetry within school English curricula has long been a
subject of debate. Some would argue that poetry has been put on a
pedestal, seen as distant from young readers’ lives or viewed as the
‘Cinderella’ element of the subject, sidelined in assessment debates.
Some see writing poetry as the distillation of a solitary imagination
whereas others perceive poetry as providing opportunities for creative
collaborative meaning making in the classroom. Web-based initiatives
such as The Poetry Archive (in the UK) and the development of
laureateships and residencies have sparked a resurgence of interest in
poetry both in and outside of the classroom.
In this special issue of English in Education we want to explore the
innovative ways in which poetry is being taught; the differing
attitudes to the genre amongst learners and teachers; the places and
purposes for poetry within school English both in the UK and
internationally. We welcome submissions on a wide range of
poetry-related issues including:
Creative responses to poetry …. The relationship between poetry and art
in the classroom
Poetry and spirituality …. Poetry as a multi-modal text …. Poetry and
the bilingual learner
Studying poetry from other cultures and traditions …. Learning to teach
poetry
The oral tradition, poetry slams and classroom performances …. Writing
poetry together
The ‘event’ of reading a poem …. What is a poem? ….Writing in new
poetic forms …. Sound and poetry …. Using song lyrics in teaching
poetry …. Poetry and wordplay ….. Recitation ….
Canonical texts …. Poets in schools ….Poetry for all.
We welcome submissions from colleagues teaching and researching in all
sectors and phases of English education within the UK and
internationally. Please refer to the ‘Notes for Contributors’ inside
the back cover of English in Education for guidance and mark your
submission ‘Poetry Matters’.
The final date for submission for this special issue is: June 1st 2007
