Call for Papers: Northeast Modern Language Association

Topic: Elbert Hubbard, The Philistine, and the Roycroft Experiment

Date: April 10-13, 2008

Location: Buffalo, New York

Elbert Hubbard began to publish The Philistine: a Periodical of Protest in
June 1895 and it continued as a weekly periodical until his death on the
Lusitania in 1915. In addition to writing a number of novels and pamphlets,
Hubbard opened a print shop, established an artisan community in East Aurora
following William Morris's Arts and Crafts principles, and built a small
empire in upstate New York. Only 20 miles from Buffalo, East Aurora became a
hub of artistic activity with artists working in wood, copper, leather, and
paper, among other things. This panel will focus on the Roycroft experiment
as it relates to literature, but I will entertain papers on any aspect of
the Roycroft Community.

Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA panel;
however panelists can only present one paper. Convention participants may
present at a paper session panel and also present at a creative session or
participate in a roundtable.
