CFP: [20th] James Joyce panel at the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture since 1900

“Essentialist Joyce?”

The International James Joyce Foundation invites proposals for 15-minute
papers to be presented at the Louisville Conference on Literature and
Culture since 1900. The conference will take place at the University of
Louisville, on February 21-23, 2008. Please send abstracts related to one
or more of the questions listed below to Agata Szczeszak-Brewer at
brewera_at_wabash.edu by October 3. Are Joyce’s characters defined by an
unchanging “essence”? Does Joyce subvert a colonial Manichaean perspective
in his fiction and political writing? Could cross-sections of
anthropology, political science, and postcolonial theory help us
understand Joyce’s interrogation of chauvinism, nationalism, racism, and
patriarchy? Does Joyce employ, in Spivak’s words, “strategic essentialism”
in his construction of Bloom and other characters?
