CFP: [African-American] Toni Morrison panels at ALA conference 2008

The Toni Morrison Society invites papers on the following topics for the
2008 American Literature Association meeting in San Francisco, CA, May 22-
25.

1) Toni Morrison and Warfare

Toni Morrison's fiction offers a telling perspective on violence,
aggression, ideology, and war in U.S. history. Her first two novels were
published during the war in Viet Nam, and her recent work emerges in a
context of warfare. This panel examines the formation, manifestation, and
impact of war as represented in Toni Morrison's fiction. Papers may
explore such issues as war theory, concepts of war, the reasons behind
humanity's obsession with war, war in terms of gender, history,
civilization, and other related issues.

2) Toni Morrison and the Child

>From her first novel's treatment of a discarded child through her most
recent expression of the pains of childhood, Morrison's work has always
been concerned with the traumas of the child. This panel seeks to examine
Morrison's treatments of children, her concepts of childhood, her views of
the child in African-American and American literature, child psychology,
and other such related issues.

3) Teaching Roundtable on Toni Morrison and Contemporary Writers

This discussion will focus on Morrison as a model for the female writer in
the contemporary age, and also on her influence on other writers of today
both within and without America's borders. We seek short (8 minutes or
less) presentations on these issues that will generate a discussion of
Morrison's place among writers of today.
