A Companion to Malcolm Arnold
Proposals are invited for A Companion to Malcolm Arnold, a collection of
musicological, music-theoretical and aesthetic essays on the British
composer Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006). The book is scheduled to be
published towards the end of 2008.
We invite contributions from academics and researchers which address any
aspects of his oeuvre, any aesthetic implications of his compositional
process, his perceptions in Britain and overseas, or his particular
position as a composer of ‘light’ and ‘serious music’ in the UK. As a
composer currently represented only as a ‘side-issue’ in academic circles,
the companion aims to stimulate discussion on the value of his symphonic
and concertante music, to explore possible influential lines of Arnold and
his influence on current composers, and to reposition him within the
context of 20th contemporary new music.
Please send your 200-300 word proposals for papers of between 6000 and 8000
words plus a short CV to Dr. Raphael D. Thoene, University of Music and
Drama Hannover (Germany): Raphael.Thoene_at_t-online.de by 1st April 2008.
Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by 21st April 2008 of the
status of their proposals, and will receive author and style notes shortly
thereafter. Full papers are expected to be submitted by July 31st, 2008.
