Call for articles: Nothing. An international interdisciplinary anthology
What is Nothing? Is Nothing? To answer these questions, one must first
reflect what “something” covers and how it is related to Nothing.
Previously Nothing has been regarded as Aristotelian horror vacui or
fullness of divine experience. It has been associated with vacuum and
entangled with the concepts of zero and infinity. Nothing has been lavishly
utilized in modern art. In postmodern theory Nothing has redefined the
traditional conception of transcendence and contemporary discussions
involve Nothing in the search for the so-called postsecular state. Perhaps
Nothing is merely a term used by scholars in different disciplines to
denote the same phenomenon: that Nothing undermines the very unity of
unified systems.
This volume gathers numerous approaches to nothingness and negation in
philosophy, religion and art. Is there something in common in how these
disciplines regard Nothing or are there substantial differences? The volume
addresses Nothing in contemporary discussions, which are either
historically informed or radically “new”.
The anthology is a part of the Academy of Finland’s research project
Literature, Transcendence, Avantgarde. The articles are written in English
and between 25 000–30 000 characters in length. We ask you to send an
abstract (around 300 words) for your submission by June 30th 2008.
Please send the abstract to the editors to following addresses:
