"Most Wired": Asian Americans, Asia, and New Media
Several major studies report that Asian Americans are the "most wired"
ethnic group in the US yet the range of representations of Asians and Asian
Pacific Americans remains limited, by type and gender. Hong Kong film
industry veterans John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat contribute to digital games
(John Woo Presents Stranglehold 2007), as does PRC martial artist and film
star Jet Li (Rise to Honor 2004). Papers might analyze these and/or female
characters in digital games based on Lucy Liu's Alex (Charlie's Angels
2003), Zhang Ziyi's Jen and Michelle Yeoh's Shu Lien (Crouching Tiger
Hidden Dragon 2003) and others. Meanwhile, Asians who are literally making
the hardware and/or designing the software are rarely acknowledged and
papers might investigate the gendered workings of electronics industries
based in Asian nations and/or in the US.
Additional topics may include but are not limited to Asian Pacific
Americans and:
-Second Life, gaming, virtual reality online
-arcade games
-gender, ethnicity, and technology
-theories of post-television
-gender, media and globalization
-television/cable characters/settings (Heroes, Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order:
SUV,etc)
