Hoaxes, Hucksters, and Phonies: Interpretations of Fraud in Popular
Discourses

The Graduate Students' Forum in English welcomes paper proposals that
address the theme of fraud and the role of the flim-flam man in current
discourses. Topics for papers or panels are not restricted to
literature. The concept of “fraud” can be interpreted liberally and may
include such topics as:

• Literary Hoaxes (J.T LeRoy, Howard Hughes's autobiography, TheTeachings
of Don Juan, Thomas Chatterton, James Macpherson’s “Ossian Cycle, James
Frey, etc.)
• Popular Culture Hoaxes (“Paul is Dead,” "ATHF Device," Wells’s The War
of the Worlds, Phising and On-Line Fraud, Hitler Diaries, etc.)
• Forgeries & Forgers (Tom Keating, Elmyr de Hory, etc.)
• Academic Hoaxes (Sokal Affair, Kent Johnson & “Araki Yasusada,” etc.)
• Films on Fraud ( F is for Fake, Catch Me if You Can, etc.)
• Monsters, Mutants, and Mysteries: (“Surgeon's Photograph" of the Loch
Ness Monster, Alien Autopsies, Piltdown Man, etc.)
• The Practical Uses of Hoax Art
• The Cultural Interest in Frauds and Hoaxes
• Authenticity vs. Forgery

Reading limit is 15-20 minutes per presentation.

The 2008 SAMLA Convention will take place in Louisville, KY from November
6th through November 8th.
